她的新书《无法冷静思考:迷乱爱情回忆录》(Can’t Think Straight: A Memoir of Mixed-Up Love)已经公开发售。

A special issue of People magazine, on newsstands now, has proclaimed American Idoljudge and singing superstar Jennifer Lopez to be the “World’s Most Beautiful Woman!” This may be a bit of hyperbole, but there’s no doubt that Lopez is a gorgeous gal. What’s interesting is that Lopez is also 41 years old. But she looks “half her age,” as Peopleswoons.

Inside the magazine, several pages are devoted to other women who look, as People cheers in bold type, “Half Their Age.” Beside each photo of a great looking woman is a little flower icon which declares, “She’s <AGE>!” (Note the exclamation point.)

There’s former supermodel Christie Brinkley, who is “57!” There’s actress Jennifer Beals, who is “47!” And there’s actress Dana Delany, who is—brace yourself—“55!” High on the list of these gals’ secrets to timeless beauty? Water, sleep, sex, yoga and vegetables. Low on or, rather, missing from the list?  Botox, facial fillers, Photoshopping, and expert lighting. But that isn’t my point.

It wasn’t too long ago that all of these women would have already hit their sell-by date for sexual attractiveness. Last year, I caught a rerun of the Blake Edwards’ movie 10, starring Dudley Moore, on television. There’s a scene where Moore is sitting in a hotel bar, drunkenly oogling the corn-rowed newlywed he is obsessively stalking, played by Bo Derek.  A pretty blond woman sitting next to him (actress Dee Wallace) laments, “Why is that when a man gets older, he gets more handsome and attractive? But when a woman gets older she just gets… old.”

The line shocked me. Dee Wallace barely looked older than Bo Derek. And she certainly looked a lot better than Dudley Moore! Sometimes it takes a line like that, written 30 years ago (by a man), to realize how far women have come.

Then again, it would be nice to get to the point where women who are 50 aren’t lauded for looking “half their age.” If a woman used to be dismissed because she was over a certain age, can it be considered progress not to dismiss her, but only if she doesn’t look it?

Maybe even—dare I dream?—we can one day get to the point where a woman’s age isn’t mentioned at all.
