They say that in every case of addiction, the first step to recovery is to admit that you have a problem. Acknowledge that you are powerless over your addiction and that your life has become unmanageable because of it.
As I sit on this lumpy couch, I wiggle my ass consciously as I search in vain for a comfortable position for my body. I knew it was a pointless deed. But I couldn’t stop my body from shifting every few seconds – the uncomfortable feeling stemmed from deep within, and no amount of positioning can make it go away. Giving up, I lean back and sit as rigidly as possible – my hands gripping my kneecaps so tight my knuckles were practically white. I cough and clear my throat, looking everywhere and at anything except the figure sitting opposite me on the leather chair.
Don’t think of Tina, Bette. Don’t think of Tina. Stop thinking of Tina. Please stop thinking of Tina..
I had to bite my lower lip in frustration, I’m pretty sure its bleeding now. The more I told myself not to think of Tina, the more I ended up thinking of her. Fuck, this isn’t working. If its possible, I think I miss her more.
I pop an eye open and steal a glance at the faces of my friends. Alice had a silly grin on – clearly thinking X-rated thoughts, or something remotely dastardly. And Shane, the nasty cheater, was sleeping. So I guess I’m not the only one with loose strings.
Alice’s mouth opens and closes like a fish as she struggles to grasp what I had just said. I’m pretty sure she’s not speechless or swayed by my argument, cause the appalled look on her face says a lot. Finally, after a few seconds of giving me the strangest of glares, she finally voices out her thoughts. “You know what, for someone who has a Master’s degree from Yale, you’re completely and utterly idiotically shitbrained when it comes to Tina.”
He finishes off in a tiny voice. After moments of awkward silence, James called out. “Bette?” He says cautiously, seeing as how I practically sat frozen in place.
“Thank you James.” I mutter quietly, my face probably the same color as the knuckles gripping the edge of my seat – pure white. As soon as he closes the door behind him, I slowly swivel back and face my desk, specifically, the cell phone lying at the middle.
So it was just Alice, hm?
“Fuccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I shriek my tonsils out in frustration.
Outside, I hear a mug crashing to the floor and someone yelping in surprise and pain. Shit. I probably owe James a coffee cup, a new shirt and an apology.
Fuck this, I’m going home.
Taking a deep cleansing breath, I force myself to talk to the woman. “T-Tina?” I ask again. Dammit, why can’t my voice level out? And why the hell am I shivering? “W-what are y-you doing h-here?”
“I wanted to surprise you.” She answers me with a soft smile, running her hands up and down my bare arms. I shudder at the contact, my eyelids drooping down with the varying sensations coursing through my skin. I watched as her lips moved, forming words that I struggled so hard to comprehend. She was saying something about heading straight here from LAX, disappointed about me not being at home but waiting nonetheless. She was saying a few more things, but for the life of me, I couldn’t absorb anything anymore. My brain was short-circuiting, and the only thing I could think of was if this woman in front of me was really Tina or a scary doppelganger.
